Socially Responsible Investing

Considering financial return and social good

Environmental, Social and Governance(ESG) is any investment strategy which seeks to consider both financial return and the social good to bring about social change. It is referred to by many terms such as Socially Responsible Investing (SRI),  Community Investing, Ethical Investing, Green Investing, Impact Investing, Sustainable Investing, and Values-Based Investing. A TIAA survey of investors conducted in 2015 found that about one-third of investors say they currently own responsible investments and nearly 50% of those who don’t, plan to do so soon.

Sustainability and ethics

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) refers to the three main areas of concern that have developed as central factors in measuring the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment in a company or business. The goal is to view these criteria with an eye toward generating long-term competitive financial returns and positive societal impact.

It's personal

Anyone who has ever pondered the activities of companies they own through their stock portfolio, mutual fund, or pension plan, may find a corporate practice that they would rather not profit from. Depending on the individual investor, this may be animal testing, solar and wind energy, producing military weapons, poor environmental performance, GLBTQ rights, woman’s equality, religion or labor. This list is extensive and extremely personal. There is no perfect company. One company may have a large number of woman on the Board of Directors with a low score on environmental stewardship. Clients who feel strongly about the importance of woman in leadership position’s may purchase this investment while others may not.

Sound investments

Several research studies have demonstrated that companies with strong corporate social responsibility policies and practices are sound investments. Studies with such findings have come from Oxford University, Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management, Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing, TIAA - CREF Asset Management and the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative. In 2015 Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management and Hamburg University conducted a meta-analysis of over 2,000 empirical studies, making it the most comprehensive review of academic research on this topic. They found that the majority of studies show a positive correlation between ESG standards and corporate financial performance.
